Bakugan Battle League at Toys R Us

 Get ready to battle!

Toys R Us in York, located at 1410 Kenneth Rd., York, PA 17408 (by the West Manchester Mall) is host to a monthly Bakugan Battle League and the next one is this Saturday August 28, 2010 at noon.

When kids arrive at their local Toys R Us to play for the first time they will receive a membership card from their league master.  At the start of each event children will get a book about the day's game to review.  They must read the challenge and choose their story option.  Games across the U.S. will be documented and the Bakugan winners decide the next story!

Children must bring their own Bakugan.  The league master is there to assist players but everyone attending should know the basic rules.  http://www.bakugan.com has plenty of information to get kids started.

This event is for ages 3 and older but remember that they need to be able to understand the game.  Parents must accompany children at all times during the League.

Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival

On Saturday August 28 from 10-5 and Sunday August 29 from 10-4 Downtown York, PA will be having their annual Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival.
In addition to more than 100 art vendors there will be a Children Festival with hands-on art and entertainment both days on North Beaver St. (first block) and a free jazz concert Saturday evening starting at 6pm at The Capitol.  Performers include The Mike Barton Quartet, Dave Wilson, Phil Markowitz, Tony Marino and Butch Reed.

We went last year and the kids had a lot of fun even though we never made it to the children area.  The kids think there is something so fantastic about being able to run down the streets of York!  We hope to be there again this year.

Perseid Meteor Shower

The annual Perseid Meteor Shower is making an appearance tonight into early tomorrow morning.  Get your binoculars, telescopes and blankets ready for this amazing and totally free event hosted by the sky!  You could see a meteor every minute but during more active times it's more like 3 per minute.
This year is the perfect one to watch this event- reports are that there is plenty to see.  The moon won't be bright enough to distract the view.  We only have to keep our fingers crossed that it's not too cloudy!

In addition to the meteor shower, this year three planets have aligned and will be viewable in a clear sky.  Venus, Mars and Saturn will be near the moon on the western horizon.  You can look for them with this map as soon as it's dark.  You can also start searching the horizon for meteors then but it's rare.
If you go out during the predawn hours you will be able to see Jupiter- it's the brightest thing in the sky!
3a.m. is the recommended time for seeing the most meteors.

Before waking up and dragging your kids out into the late night (or super early morning) get them excited by sharing some educational fun facts about meteor showers, stars and planets. You can find lots of great information at Space.com

The Great Kindness Challenge, Saturday August 14, 2010

The Great Kindness Challenge, presented by Kids for Peace will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010.  This is a WORLDWIDE event!!  The purpose of the Great Kindness Challenge is to promote acts of service and kindness all over the world.  Of course, this should be done EVERY day but this is a day to celebrate and support it by completing as many acts as possible.

To make this extra fun the website, The Great Kindness Challenge has provided a checklist of 50 activities that you and your family can complete on Saturday.  You can complete many of them during your regular routine, whether you stay at home or spend the day out and about.

Some examples of kind acts from the checklist are painting a picture to give to someone, calling your grandparents, donating to an animal shelter (this can be free- take over your old blankets and towels instead of throwing them away and you'll be recycling too!), pick up some trash, feed the birds...there is SO much to do and even the little things count.

Download and print out a copy for everyone in your family and challenge yourselves to spread the kindness on August 14th! When you're done you can share your activities with their community via their Facebook Page or e-mail them at info@greatkindnesschallenge.org
