Windsor Fest- Saturday July 24, 2010

Saturday July 24, 2010 from 10am-6pm the Windsor Fest will be held at Laucks Memorial Field (The Windsor Ball Field).  It's a one-day family event with be rides, food, live entertainment and crafts.  There will also be special appearances by Mickey Mouse and Elmo!

I can't for the life of me figure out where Laucks Memorial Field is.  I tried to Google it but with little luck.  I got results for all the local hospitals and a church in Windsor- is that where it is?  Sounds like fun!

Brown's Orchard Cooking Demo for Kids

Friday 7/23/10 at 10am at Brown's South, Loganville in the Brown Bean Cafe is offering  a Kid’s Class :  Make Your Own Pizza (ages 5-12)

Limited space so please pre-register by calling 717-428-2036.

Cost is $15.  The class will last until approximately 11:15am.

Kids pick their own toppings and make a savory pizza and a dessert pizza (to eat or take home). They will be making the pizza dough and learning about yeast. Steps to make any kind of pizza and recipes are included.

$15 for a lifetime of knowledge (and the ability to make pizza on pizza night instead of ordering potentially poor quality pizza!) is a pretty good deal!  Limited space- they are only accepting 10 children.  Hopefully if it's successful they will have more of these in the future.

Summer Wildflower Walk at Nixon Park

Nixon Park is having a Summer Wildflower Walk on Sunday July 18, 2010 from 2:30-4pm.  This is a free educational hike taking visitors through the park to study flowers and learn about their roles.  No pre-registration required.  The age range for this event isn't listed.  I suggest using your judgment but it seems more appropriate for kids 12 and older, or for younger kids who love nature and hiking.

Inspiring H.O.P.E. Playground at Cousler Park is Now Open!

The Inspiring H.O.P.E. playground at Cousler Park in Manchester Township has completed construction and is ready to be enjoyed.  I've been looking forward to the opening of this playground!  I think it's a fantastic idea.  You can read about their mission and purpose by clicking on the post title but here is a sampling from their website:

"Inspiring H.O.P.E will create a community-build, barrier-free playground to allow children who cannot walk, see or hear to have a place to play alongside children who can. Nearly 5,000 elementary and middle school-aged children from York County have sensory, physical, or mental disabilities. They need a place to play safely with equipment designed for their abilities. The project will serve the children with disabilities and parents who have disabilities who cannot maneuver around other playgrounds because of barriers."

A perfectly free and fun afternoon for all ages.  Have your older kids bring their bikes or scooters (with helmets!) if they don't like playing on playgrounds.  There are 3 trails ranging from .5-1.5 miles in length.

It looks like it will be a fun and educational time for all ages, especially since it will be held at the beautiful Codorus State Park- if older children (10 and up) get bored there is so much to explore!

I went to the library website (you can click on the post title to go there) and saw some other events that are going on through York County Libraries and saw something about Creepy Crawly Worm Races.  It didn't say when and where those were taking place (It definitely didn't mention it in the SplashFest announcement) but I must find out!  I have a 5 year old daughter who LOVES creepy crawly things and she would love this!!

Has anyone ever been to this?  Saturday is my son's 9th birthday so it will be up to him whether we go or not but I'm hoping he'll be interested in at least checking it out.  If he doesn't like it we can always simply enjoy one of our favorite big parks.
